Distractions of The Week - 2

Book - A Gentleman in Moscow

I picked up this book about a Russian aristocrat under house arrest expecting to find little I identified with. However, the overlying themes of solitude, which one would expect to dread right now, actually helped me find a moment of peace as misery loves company. This novel follows a Russian Count frozen in his time as he watches life pass by and history be made right in front of the Moscow Metropol hotel in the 1920s and 30s. After reading this, I felt less alone while immersed in the charm and childlike joy this book brought me.

Company - Mejuri

Founder Noura Sekkijha is a third-generation jeweler who founded and marketed her company based on word of mouth and organic exposure. According to Business Insider, Sekkihja has a background in industrial engineering and later on went to earn her MBA, which proves as an excellent example that female entrepreneurs do not have to be pigeonholed by certain backgrounds. Her vision with Mejuri is to create a luxury brand of jewelry at an affordable price so that women could gift it to themselves instead of waiting for someone else to buy it for them. What. An. Icon.

Documentary - Unstoppable

Bethany Hamilton’s Unstoppable is a documentary that covers the incident that changed the surfing legend’s life forever. Hamilton’s shark attack left her hopeless after losing one of her arms. However, Unstoppable shows the resilience of an athlete balancing the duality of surfing and handling motherhood. A woman is much more than her devotion to a single element and reveals her talent and multi-faceted talent.

Album - King Princess

A soulful singer/songwriter, King Princess got her start in 2018 at just 19 years old. She creates music that is both beautiful and critical of social norms. I have been really vibing to the singles “Talia” and “Hit the Back” which are both strongly nostalgic of the loneliness we feel during our early adolescence.

Influencer - Margot Lee

Instagram and Youtube influencer Margot Lee has been an inspirational outlet for almost a year now. The Syracuse graduate manages her brand as a businesswoman meets cosmopolitan and markets herself as an entrepreneur of her own brand, but maintains her status as a 21-year-old. Mastering both beauty and brains, Lee takes it to a whole new level what the college-aged woman is capable of. Demanding the female college woman to be taken seriously, Lee shows her life and inspires both in terms of managing mentor relationships with her professors and taking the weekend away from campus to attend fashion week.
